On the news today there was a bit of talk concerning the prices of texting plans. Oddly, I couldn’t find much about the news online but at least the ABC article was online. The article was talking about, if texting is so cheap for carriers, why does it cost so much for us?

I have a very supportive opinion on a government intervention concerning texting. I would say that if the government stepped in to regulate text messaging pricing, like they did for phones fifty years ago, go for it. The ABC article says that one phone call equals about 600 texts. Isn’t that ridiculous?
I’ve also debated this with various people on Facebook in the past. I’ve always won the argument in one way or another, but people never actually saw the broader picture. Texting may have been limited years ago, when a single packet was all carriers could spare. However, now, with actual internet plans and when carriers can support hundreds of packets, it would be possible to provide rich text capabilities and probably more features along that line.
Texting was unknown to me until not too long ago. It’s an odd way to communicate, it’s basically email without an email address, it’s really short and really easy to graft on to an existing network and it’s generally easy to sell. Want to send short messages? Sure, let’s go now.
So in short, I support some regulation on the prices for texting. Only because if there is some regulation, I think there will be some more innovation on it.
